When the Philistines are confronted with the supremacy of Yahweh over their false god, Dagon, their response is to reject Yahweh, to send the ark away because it is troubling them and their idol. I’m a little dumbfounded by their response. One would think that such tangible proof of God being greater than their statue would make them reject the false god to follow the true One.
But we often see the same response today. We might not see our idols fall on the ground, their head and hands severed, but the supremacy of God is evident. As Romans 1:20 confirms, “Ever since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—God’s eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, because they are understood through the things God has made. So humans are without excuse.”
Yet we continue to follow after things which have proven time and time again that they cannot satisfy. Money, fame, love, drugs and alcohol, sex, food, knowledge, religious practice, you name it - whatever you passionately seek will leave you weary, disappointed, and unsatisfied. Only a personal relationship with God fulfills the desire of our hearts, because God is the One who created that desire in us.
Psalm 37:4 tells us to “Delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Friends, He gives us the desires of our heart because, when we delight in Him, He IS the desire of our heart. In the same way, when we reject God, He gives us over to the desire of our heart - sin. We then pursue sin with an unquenchable thirst for more until it destroys us.
