Genesis 24
Abraham’s servant had no doubt witnessed God do amazing things for his boss long before he was sent to bring back a wife from Abraham's people for his master's son, Isaac. He had witnessed or at least heard the story of Abraham’s long wait for the son God promised. He’d heard Abraham recount God’s call to leave his family, and even as Abraham sent his servant, he demanded a promise not to take Isaac back to the land of his father.
The servant prayed very specifically for God to guide him to the woman he should bring back to be Isaac’s wife, and God answered.
Are we willing to pray with this kind of specificity or do we offer up generic prayers so, regardless of the answer, we can maintain our weak faith? It takes boldness and assurance to ask for God to do something that, when answered, leaves absolutely no doubt about Who answered. It takes a willingness to accept no for an answer. When we pray for generic blessings, we may still give God praise for the answer; we may still believe that He provided; but when we see God act with such precision, we’re left in awe of His magnificent attention to detail.
When we are seeking God's will, He does not hide it from us. God wants our faith to grow. He encourages us to “Ask and you shall receive.” When we ask for something very specific, we are able to clearly discern His answer and to grow in faith.
What specific request am I asking the Lord for today that only He can do?
What am I praying about that, when God answers, whether positively or negatively, will leave no doubt that it was God?
