It’s easy to get bogged down in this chapter pondering “Joshua’s Long Day” and miss the more important point: God did what He said He would do and gave them miraculous victory over all the nations they displaced. I can’t begin to explain what happen astrologically as Joshua cried out to God and the sun stood still, and there are a ton of websites you can check out that provide a variety of possible explanations, but I rest in the fact that God’s ways are above mine. I can’t explain how God said, “Let there be light and there was light” either, but I believe it happened.
We may not be able to understand with our finite human brains everything about our infinite God and how He creates and operates the universe, but we can know that He is faithful to His Word. What He says He will do, He will do. Even if it meant stopping the planets in their motion or making time stand still. Even if it meant sending His Son to die in our place. Even if it means waiting until every tribe and tongue has heard the gospel for Him to return and reign.
I see God’s faithfulness to His Word not only in the Bible, but in my life. What God has promised, He accomplishes. Sometimes it may not be in the manner I expected, or even in the way I would prefer. Often times it is in a way that I never could have anticipated that exceeds any expectations I might have had. Frequently, it is not on my schedule and requires me to wait patiently and trust that while it may appear that the sun is standing still and nothing is happening, God is working in ways I cannot see to accomplish all that is needed.
How have you seen God faithfully fulfill His promises in your life? What have you seen God accomplish that was beyond any explanation?
